Hydroseed Aftercare Guide

Congratulations on your recent hydroseeding project! To ensure successful growth and establishment of your newly seeded area, proper aftercare is crucial. Follow these guidelines to maximize the effectiveness of your hydroseeding investment.

Avoid foot traffic on newly hydroseeded areas.

Watering

1. Initial watering: After hydroseeding, the seeds and mulch need moisture to promote germination. Water the area lightly, using a sprinkler, to avoid washouts and puddling. Apply water frequently to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid over-watering, as it can lead to soil erosion. Avoid watering at night to give the lawn time to dry out to prevent fungus growth.
2. Maintain moisture: Continue watering the newly hydroseeded area regularly to prevent the soil from drying out. As a general rule, water the area daily for the first two weeks. After that, gradually reduce the frequency of watering while increasing the duration to encourage deep root growth.

Mowing

1. Timing of the first mow: Once the grass reaches about 3-4 inches in height, it's time for the first mowing.
2. Mowing height: Set your lawnmower to a high setting, leaving the grass at least 2.5 inches tall. Longer grass helps shade the soil, minimizes weed growth, and promotes healthier root development.
3. Mowing frequency: Mow your hydroseeded area regularly, ensuring not to remove more than one-third of the grass blade height at a time. Frequent mowing encourages denser growth and discourages weed competition.

Fertilizing

1. Follow-up fertilization: About four to six weeks after hydroseeding, your lawn will benefit from a follow-up fertilizer application. Use a slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients to the developing grass and avoid using fertilizer with weed killer in it.
